Chainmail -What is it?

Chainmail is a type of armor made from thousands of small metal rings linked together to form a flexible, protective fabric. First appearing around 300 B.C., it was one of the most widely used forms of body armor in history, worn by Roman legionaries, Germanic warriors, medieval knights, and Spanish conquistadors over a span of nearly two thousand years.

The term “chainmail” comes from the Latin word macula, meaning “mesh”. ver centuries, it evolved from functional armor to a decorative art form, particularly during the Middle Ages, when knights and nobility used elaborate chainmail garments to signify strength and status. Modern artisans have adapted these techniques to create jewellery that reflects historical craftsmanship while appealing to contemporary fashion trends.

Chainmail initially sparked my interest in 2024, and since then, has taken over my creative life. I absolutely love everything about it, from the history to the craftsmanship. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a finished chainmail pieces I worked tirelessly on or hours or days. My fav patterns are the OG Byzantine, European 4-in-1 and other patterns I randomly create and forget soon after haha. I am always up for a challenge and am always down to create something new and tedious:)!
